Computer Ethics
I now turn directly to the ethical dimensions of using computer systems in healthcare and dentistry. As I rely more and more on digital technologies in clinical work, I also take on new ethical responsibilities. Computer ethics, in this context, is not an abstract theory; it is the set of principles that guides how I design, use, and manage digital systems when they touch the most sensitive areas of human life: personal data, illness, pain, and decisions about health and treatment.
At the center of computer ethics stands responsibility. Every time I open an electronic health record, run a digital diagnostic tool, send an image for teleconsultation, or rely on a software system to support a treatment decision, I am not “just using a computer.” I am making choices that directly affect real people. Ethical use of these systems demands honesty, professional integrity, attention to detail, and a clear sense of accountability for the consequences of my actions.
One of the first ethical pillars I must respect is privacy and confidentiality. In clinical work, I routinely handle extremely sensitive information: medical histories, diagnoses, laboratory results, genetic data, psychological assessments, notes about family situations, and more. Patients share this information because they trust me and my institution. I have a moral duty, not just a legal obligation, to ensure that only those who genuinely need this information for legitimate healthcare purposes can access it. That means I carefully control user accounts, limit permissions, avoid unnecessary sharing, and refuse to browse records “out of curiosity.”
Closely linked to privacy is the question of data security. Ethical behavior obliges me to do everything I reasonably can to protect systems and data from unauthorized access, hacking, or accidental exposure. This includes using strong authentication, encryption where appropriate, secure communication channels, regular software updates, and periodic security audits. When a patient gives me their information, they have every right to expect that it will not be left on an unprotected USB drive, emailed over insecure channels, sold to commercial entities without consent, or stored in systems with obvious vulnerabilities.
In the digital world, informed consent takes on new layers of complexity. It is not enough for a patient to sign a form. I need to explain, in clear and understandable language, how their data will be stored, who will have access, for what purposes it will be used, and what rights they have to review, correct, or request deletion of certain information where the law allows it. When I use cloud-based platforms, telemedicine applications, or AI tools, I must make sure that patients are aware of these digital dimensions and that their consent truly reflects understanding—not just a rushed signature in a waiting room.
Accuracy and reliability form another crucial ethical area. If I rely on software for decision support, for image analysis, or for treatment planning, I must be confident that this technology has been properly tested, validated, and maintained. A programming error, a biased training dataset, or a misconfigured system can lead to wrong diagnoses, inappropriate treatments, or harmful delays. I share responsibility with developers, administrators, and vendors: I cannot blindly trust the machine. I must understand its limitations, read warnings, report anomalies, and insist on quality assurance before integrating new tools into routine care.
At the same time, I must guard against over-reliance on technology. Digital tools can increase efficiency and reduce human error, but they cannot replace clinical judgment, empathy, or direct human contact. An ethical practitioner does not simply accept whatever the screen displays. I compare what I see in the system with what I observe in the patient’s face, body language, and story. If something feels inconsistent, I ask questions, seek second opinions, or repeat tests. Technology should enhance my thinking, not switch it off.
Ethics also requires me to think about equity and access. Not every patient has a smartphone, fast internet, or the skills to navigate complex digital portals. Older adults, people in rural areas, those with low digital literacy, or those living with disabilities may struggle with the very tools that others find convenient. When I promote digital solutions, I ask myself: who might be left behind by this system? How can I provide alternatives—offline support, in-person explanations, printouts, interpreters, or accessible interfaces—so that digital transformation does not deepen existing inequalities?
My ethical responsibilities extend into my online behavior as well. When I communicate with patients through messaging platforms, telehealth tools, or even when I appear on social media as a professional, I must uphold the same standards I follow in the clinic. That means maintaining professional boundaries, avoiding casual sharing of clinical snapshots or stories that could identify individuals, and staying away from conflicts of interest and unverified medical claims. A fast message or a quick post can do serious harm if I forget my ethical and professional role.
Institutions and policymakers share in this responsibility, and I am part of those structures. Ethics cannot depend only on individual good will; it must be supported by clear policies, training, and oversight. That includes institutional codes of conduct for digital practice, procedures for reporting and responding to data breaches, regular staff education on cybersecurity and privacy, and transparent mechanisms for auditing how digital systems are used. When something goes wrong—a leak, a misuse of data, an unsafe AI tool—there should be clear steps for investigation, correction, and learning.
In the end, computer ethics in healthcare and dentistry is about protecting human dignity in a digital age. As the systems I use become more powerful and more deeply embedded in every aspect of care, my ethical awareness must grow alongside them. If I stay mindful of privacy, security, informed consent, reliability, fairness, professional conduct, and institutional responsibility, I can make sure that technology truly serves the interests of patients. In doing so, I help build a form of digital healthcare that is not only efficient and innovative, but also humane, trustworthy, and worthy of the profession I represent.
